Pickaway County Home Page

Pickaway County, Ohio. When Pickaway County was formed in 1810 there were no existing settlements that seemed suitable for a county seat. Therefore, a new town was laid out within the ancient's "circle" on the high bank east of the Scioto River. That is how Pickaway and Circleville were born.

Circleville was, for many years, the home of Caleb Atwater, the "Father of Ohio's Public School System", an amateur historian and archeologist of note. It was also the boyhood home of Benjamin Hanby, composer of "Up on the Housetop". Noted entertainer Ted Lewis was born in Circleville and spent his youth here. The city park is named in his honor and a museum has been opened to display his memorabilia.

There are many opportunities in Pickaway, whether you are considering work or recreation. Consider taking an excursion back in history to an 1880's farm or a tour through a museum filled with the history of the community and country. You could spend your time fishing on a lake or watching birds spreading their wings. Perhaps you would rather go water-skiing & motor boating. How about swimming or horseback riding? Many enjoy golfing as well.

An evening at the races might be fun or spending an evening under the stars at an outdoor amphitheater. Spend an evening of mystery at a castle. Spend your time doing some shopping at a dozen different specialty shops or antique malls. As it gets colder you can delight in cross country skiing or ice skating on a frozen pond
