Hocking County was formed by an Act of the Ohio General Assemble on March 1 1818. The Hocking River flows through the County, which was once claimed by the Wyandot Indians.

The Hocking Hills region is home to 9 state parks, over 9000 acres of state forest land, 4 nature preserves and one of the largest metro parks in the state.

Hiking, fishing, camping, horseback riding, canoeing, rappelling, and bird watching are just a few of the activities visitors to the area enjoy. Hocking County is often called the "Hot Tub" capital of the mid-West. If you like outdoor activities and camping, the Hocking Hills has hundreds of cabins and cottages available tucked away back in the hills. In Hocking County you will find state parks, national forests, caves, hiking and biking trails, streams, waterfalls, rock climbing, fishing, swimming, and for those who prefer their recreation a bit less rustic Hocking offers golf, tennis, and shopping
