Columbus, Ohio. The city of Columbus was founded in 1812 and has served as the state capital of Ohio since 1816. The city has gradually grown into the most populous city in the state of Ohio, due to its spacious regions and community oriented nature. Annexation has enabled the city to grow from 39.9 square miles in 1950 to over 212.6 square miles today.
